A place where art, culture, history and the natural world come together in beautiful surroundings, it's yours to discover:

SLOVAKIA – the heart of EUROPE

For centuries a province of the Hapsburg Empire, Slovakia is a "young" nation which is now virtually at the centre of Europe.
It is a largely upland country with a flourishing and generally unspoilt natural environment. Home to under six million people in an area over twice the size of Wales, Slovakia abounds in mountains and hills, which cover eighty percent of the country, having modest plains only in the far south. The main mountain range is that of the wild High Tatras, set in the national park which bears the same name.

The capital of Slovakia is Bratislava, which lies at the western edge of the country, beside the Danube; it is a city of ancient origins, believed to have already been in existence at the time of the Celts. In the mediaeval period, Bratislava played an important role in the history of the Kingdom of Hungary, to the extent of hosting the coronations of eleven kings in the gothic cathedral of Saint Martin.
Visitors will find plenty to interest them in the collection of castles scattered among various valleys, the country villages, and above all the Catholic churches made of wood, which stand as wonderful examples both of architecture and of popular devotion. These are very rare religious buildings built exclusively from wood only, with overlapping timbers avoiding the use of nails, to symbolise the crucifixion of Jesus.

The mountains of Slovakia are also ideal for hiking and trekking, perhaps with a stop in a traditional restaurant to sample the local cuisine and its rich and nourishing soups, which in the past were often a main course in themselves. Slovakia is, then, a country of great historical and natural interest, ideal for peaceful holidays far from the madding crowd.

Ivachnova:
A little village lapped by the river Vah lying 6 or 7 miles from the city of Ruzomberok; its position in the centre of Slovakia close to major road arteries and not far (less than 40 miles) from the Polish border makes it a convenient base for reaching places of tourist interest such as Krakow and Zakopane.

Besenova Thermal park:
This is a thermal water park which is open all year round and may be found just 1¼ miles from our facilities at Kastiel Ivachnova. The water gushing out from below ground reaches the surface at around 40°C.

Liptovska Mara:
This area, with its large artificial lake created by a dam, offers ample opportunity for boat trips, or sports such as wind surfing, fishing and sailing.

Aquapark Tatralandia:
Created to give you that holiday feeling all year round, this is a great place to have fun.

Vlkolonec:
Tucked away in the mountains, this old settlement has a magical atmosphere that will draw you back in time. Its historical importance has gained it official designation from Unesco.

Pribylina:
The Liptov museum of rural life is for you if you would like to discover the life and traditions of the forebears of modern Slovakians.

Demanovska Ladova Jaskyna:
These "ice caves", so called because of the optical effects which make the stalactites and stalagmites look like ice, are a fascinating attraction that will have you marvelling at what nature is able to create.

Skipark Park Snov Ruzomberok:
The park is just six or seven miles from the Happy Village, and has a new ski lift and slopes for both experts and beginners. In summer, the same area can be recommended for its excellent cycle touring routes.
